Can somebody help me understand the algebra of this?

Well, $(k+1)!-1 +(k+1)(k+1)! = (k+1)! + (k+1)(k+1)! - 1 = (1+(k+1))(k+1)! - 1$. In the last equation you just have to pull out $(k+1)!$.
