In conditional expectation, why is $E(X \mid X)=X$ instead of $E(X \mid X)=E(X)$?

In conditional expectation, why is $E(X \mid X)=X$ instead of $E(X \mid X)=E(X)$? If we know the distribution $X$, wouldn't the expected value of the distribution just be $E(X)$?
