Consider $ABC$ is triangle and $a$ , $b$ and $c$ are sides of it. Can we say $a = x+y$ , $b = x+z$ and $c = y+z$ where $x,y,z > 0$ ? Is it true ?
Note : I know in triangle we have $a+b > c$ , $a+c > b$ and $b+c > a$ but I don't know that first statement is true or not.
Please Help!
Yes.
(Algebraic answer) just solve the system of equations you just written up with $a,b,c$ as known and $x,y,z$ as unknowns. E.g. adding the first two, we have $a+b=2x+y+z$. Combining with the 3rd equation, $x$ will be just expressed by $a,b,c$.
(Geometric answer) Draw the inscribed circle in the triangle, and take the segments on the sides.
